Gangs Of Wasseypur: An Emotion

Today is the 10 years anniversary of Gangs of Wasseypur. Gangs of Wasseypur is the movie I think I have watched 16th times or even more, I don’t know. It’s an emotion. It can resonate with any feelings: happy, sad, joy, anger…everything. Even in the time when I was feeling like not watching anything, that time also I end up getting playing Gangs of Wasseypur on my pc. It was not only the most influential cinema ever made in the Hindi film industry but also the most influential cinema made in the whole world in the last decade. In the word of Martin Scorcese, “It was inspiring”. Exactly Ten years ago what Anurag Kashyap made, I bet he also didn’t think that this movie would divide the Hindi cinema into two eras, the Post-GOW era and the Pre-GOW era. Unlike Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’ or Scorsese’s ‘Goodfellas’ where we can see gangsters usually in fashionable suet-tie, here in Anurag’s world we can see the complete opposite, who can even imagine wearing ‘Gamcha’ would be a “Gangster” thing to do…From the cinematic style of Scorsese’s capturing authenticity to Tarantino’s tendency to make the violence humorous and bring something unexpected on the screen, we can surely see this influence on the GOW but in such a subtle way where the plot is based on a rural village called Dhanbad in Bihar. The making of this movie should be taught in every film school in the world. I can’t remember how many times I have watched 1-hour making of the GOW video which is available on youtube. This movie gives the industry some generational talent and some great songs like Moora, Oh Womeniya, Hunter, Taar Bijli, Bhoos Ke Dher, Jiya Tu, Keh Ke Lunga and many. The fantastic music was made by phenomenal producer Sneha Khanwalkar who eventually flew half of the world and went to Trinidad and Tobago for the ‘Chutney’ music and that gives the birth of “I am a hunter, she wants to see my gun”...which is obviously not a double-meaning song. There is a song in the movie whose lyrics are only “Tain Tain Tain Tain To To Ta”...thanks to the lyricist Varun Grover. This movie is inspired by ‘City of God’ and the Tamil film ‘Subramaniapuram’ but how Anurag Kashyap made this movie with such an artistic style it will surely inspire many more upcoming cinemas. Gangs Of Wasseypur is stand on its own. It will never be replaced and no other cinema will ever be compared with this movie. Thank You Anurag Kashyap for giving this masterpiece to the world.
